Eden Hazard has stoked up talk of a January transfer after admitting to being frustrated by his lack of game time under Carlo Ancelotti.
The former Chelsea man is a man on the periphery at the Bernabeu and he has been ever since his July 2019 transfer. Real Madrid could end up paying a club-record transfer of £130m for the Belgium star. But his time in Spain has been troublesome.
He has scored just seven goals in 70 appearances and his impact and he is a player that Ancelotti is yet to place his trust in.
In comparison Hazard was almost unplayable at times in the Premier League and scored 110 goals from 352 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea.
Hazard was linked with a return to Chelsea in the summer, while Newcastle were also said to be interested in the 31-year-old.
But the Belgium star waved away the transfer talk and insisted he was still focused on Madrid.
“The coach knows that I still have a contract until 2024,” he told HLN in May. “My first three seasons at Real have not gone well, so I want to show everyone what I can do.
“Starting with this Saturday. It has always been a dream to play for Real. It still is.”
However, after just one start in the league since February this year, Hazard’s mood has changed.
He was handed a rare start against Mallorca after playing well against Celtic. But he failed to impress Ancelotti and was subsequently dropped and now looks back to square one.
Speaking on international duty, Hazard told RTL: “I was happy to start another match. You saw that, I think. I’m happy when I play and it was nice to play for the supporters here [in Brussels] again. Our first half was very good.
“I know what I can do. Now I want to get in shape for the World Cup. We’ll see what the coach [Roberto Martinez] decides, but I’m happiest when I play.
“There have been difficult and tough times because I wanted to play, but I’m not playing.
“I feel good at Real Madrid, but I’m playing less. And when I go out on the pitch I feel good. It’s a complicated situation. I want to play more.”
Whether or not Hazard will push his claims for a move in January is uncertain. A change in his situation seems unlikely given the options open to Ancelotti.
Rodrygo, Vinicius Jnr, Fede Valverde and Marco Asensio all seem to be above Hazard in the pecking order.
Hazard will still have 12 months remaining on his deal next June. Los Blancos will not want to lose him for free having paid so much for his signature. But they also know there are very few suitors interested in taking the player on a permanent deal.
A loan with an option to buy may just be the best solution for both parties and expect plenty of interest from the Premier League.
